Radio Live, Tauranga 1107

In a letter received today, 15 days after I sent my reception report by air mail, Gwendolyn Woodney confirms my reception of Radio Live, Tauranga 1107. This station was heard well in Kongsfjord on 17 October 2007. She writes: "Thank you for the letter and CD that you sent us. It has created quite a buzz around the office. It is amazing that you can pick up RadioLive in Kongsfjord, when we can't even get it in our building!"

After a few days Gustavo Bastias, Jefe de Producción, sent me an email with a perfect confirmation of my reception of Radio Nihuil. This radio station has been on my "wanted" list for some time, and was captured on 23 September 2007 by my SDR-IQ at Kalvøya (Smøla) on the west coast of mid Norway.

Dudley Scantlebury, Southern Star Breakfast Host/Technical Administrator in the Rhema Broadcasting Group, kindly confirmed my reception of Southern Star, Wellington 657 tonight. Dudley writes: "The announcer on your recording was Peter Shaw promoting our 10th Anniversary celebrations which were held on the 19th Oct in Wellington". We heard this great station on 16 October 2007 (KONG17), when for once the semi-local Murmansk transmitter on 657 was off.

V6MP The Cross Radio, Pohnpei 4755,25

Roland at the Pacific Missionary Aviation in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, today confirmed my 15 October 2007 reception of V6MP The Cross Radio. The station was heard with a superb quality one of the days during the KONG17 DXpedition. The signal was so good that I don't think they were on the air every day. And Roland comments: "Our SW has been off the air for the last 6 weeks, because we are changing the antenna".
Early January I also received this nice QSL card.

CHHA Radio Voces Latinas was heard on 1609,95 kHz on 15 October 2005 (KONG13), but the reception report wasn't sent until August this year. A reminder via email resulted in an email from Fr. Hernan Astudillo of San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre confirming my reception.

I was very surprised to receive an email from Esmerlin Hernandez today, more than 8 months after I sent my air mail reception report to San Pedro de Macorís, kindly confirming my reception of HIAJ Radio Amanecer 1060. I heard this station one night at a very nice weekend DXpedition to the island of Kalvøya (Smøla), my 18th, in March this year.

KTMT Ashland OR 580 was one of the nice low-frequency North Americans we picked up at the KONG17 DXpedition, and during dinner tonight I received a short email from Devin Harpole, Program Director - KTMT-AM, where he confirmed my reception. This station has a Spanish format and is named Radio LAZER.

Nick Tyler confirmed my KONG17 reception of The Mighty 790 KGHL in an email today. This nice radio station was heard once during 2 hours and 12 minutes on 790 on 22 October.

3YW Radio New Zealand National, Westport 1458

A QSL card was also enclosed for 3YW 1458 in Westport, which is situated south west of Nelson on New Zealand's South Island.

This became my QSL no. 100, and QSL no. 70 on mediumwave, from The Pacific.

2YX Radio New Zealand National, Nelson 1116

Just 7 days after I sent my reception report via email for this great KONG17 logging, I received an air mail letter from Wellington today. Adrian Sainsbury sent me a perfect QSL card for 2YW 1116, a frequency schedule for Radio New Zealand International and a frequency guide for Radio New Zealand Concert. Nelson is up in the north on New Zealand's South Island.

CBQC Fort Providence NT 1230 was a long wanted station due to its remote location west of the Great Slave Lake. That red pin certainly looks nice in my wall map! This station was heard on the last day of the KONG17 DXpedition. Thanks a lot to Janet Pacey for confirming my reception!

I managed to hear KMAS one day during KONG17, despite a normally strong KTWO. Yesterday I sent my reception report, and tonight I received this very nice email from G.M. Dale Hubbard. I received a very nice email last night, as a reply to my reception report sent via air mail five weeks ago. Désir Quiquely, Chef de fab. radio, confirms my 7 September 2007 (Smøla) reception of Radio Martinique 1310. The email also contains three mp3 and three jpg attachments - jingles and photos from the station.
This was a very nice email reply, and of course it was a new country (216) in my collection - the first this year.

CB127 Radio Festival, Viña del Mar 1270

A letter has arrived at the post office, waiting to be picked up when I'm back from KONG17. Expect this to be a QSL!

And yes indeed it was! A very nice and friendly letter, two stickers, a CD and - for the first time in years - a pennant!

I listened to the CD tonight (30 October), and it contained a recording of an on air programme about my reception report where they also played my recording of Radio Festival. Two really funny guys in studio that night :-)

ZYJ754 Rádio Guarujá, Florianópolis SC 1420

I never heard this station with no good quality on 5980 kHz, but I happened to pick them up on 1420 kHz early September at Smøla. The first of a number of nice emails from Carlos Alberto arrived today, and he has promised to send me a confirmation by mail as well.

31 October 2007 I received an A4 envelope from the station, containing a very nice letter with a confirmation of my reception, a separate QSL letter, a sticker, two post cards, a CD with a recording of a part of their programming incl. station identification, and also some other stuff.

Not much is like QSL on a Saturday (well, frankly I could mention a few things ...), and I just received a nice email from Jaime Sánchez, Director de las Emisoras de RCN en Manizales. He confimes my reception of HJNL La Cariñosa, Manizales 1450, which I heard among other nice LA stations on 1450 during my stay at Smøla four weeks ago. HJJZ Radio Manantial, Santafé de Bogotá 1310

During excellent conditions towards South America on 7 September, my latest DXped to Smøla, I suddenly could hear an announcement on 1310 kHz from an unknown station during a short fade in the huge signal from Radio Nacional de Venezuela. The station turned out to be Radio Manantial, after I sent a recording to Jan Alvestad who knew that Colorón Color Radio had become Radio Manantial. Thank you Jan, and a great thank you to Bibiana Amézquita for confirming my reception via email today.

I sent a new reception report by air mail to Rádio 9 de Julho on 24 September, after I heard them on the island of Smøla early September. And already today I received a very nice email from Marcos Beltramin, confirming my reception!

Mid October I also received a very nice letter from the same gentleman, and also no less than 16 stickers and some other stuff.

I heard the station with an excellent quality on a DXpedition to the famous island of Smøla (Kalvøya) last week end. On Saturday I received a very nice email from Evangeline C. Bumat confirming my 21 October 2006 (KONG15) reception of DYTR 1116 AM. She's giving some nice and useful information on the station:
"Just recently, we have our victory party because in the latest survey conducted by a reputable institution in our place, DYTR 1116 AM comes out no. 1 provincewide. This is our first time in many years. Our 91.1 FM station is also consistent no.1 in two years now. To further strengthen and widen our signal reach and audienceshare,both our AM & FM transmitter are now undergoing total rehabilitation."

CKBC Bathurst NB 1360 moved to FM and closed down their MW transmitter a few years ago, so it was nice adding them to my collection tonight when John LeBlanc, Program Supervisor on MAX 104.9 FM, confirmed my 18 October 2001 (KONG6) reception of CKBC. He ends his email like this:

WXNT Indianapolis IN 1430

WXNT Indianapolis IN is not the most common station on 1430, with its superdominants KLO and KEZW. I heard them last October during KONG15, but I didn't find out until today when I listened to a 160-minute-long minidisc recording of 1430 kHz.
I just received a very nice reply from Scott Sands, the Director of Operations and Programming in Entercom Indianapolis WZPL/WNTR/WXNT. I'd like to publish his letter here:

KKLF Richardson TX 1700

KKLF is not among the most common stations on 1700, which usually is dominated by KVNS and XEPE. But patience often pays off, and a few days ago, while examining recordings from KONG15 last year, I found several "570 KLIF" identifications on 1700 kHz.

DYAB ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network, Cebu City 1512

I heard DYAB 1512 for the first time in October 1998 during the KONG3 DXpedition, and again last year during KONG15. DX'ing the Philippines fascinates me a lot, so I sent a reception report for the 2006 reception as well. This time, in the era of email, I even received a verification! Very nice letter by air mail from VON Radio, Charletown 895, came during my holidays. The letter was written and signed by Michelle Rodriques, Junior Radio Announcer/News Reporter on this lovely radio station. "Mr. Bue, we are impressed by your report, as it is for the most part accurate. We thank you for listening to the VON Radio, The Power House of the Eastern Caribbean [...]". They also sent me a hurricane map.

This verification was most wanted, and it's my QSL no. 40 from Latin America this year making 2007 my best season ever regarding LA DX!

After Brazil's victory against Argentina in Copa America on Sunday, I sent a reminder to a few Brazilian radio stations. One of them was ZYH585 Ceará Rádio Clube, which I heard back in 1992. I found a working email address on their home page and I received a very nice email from Angélica Cavalcanti, who is 'gerente administrativo financeiro'.

CKSQ Stettler AB 1400

Very nice email tonight from Brent Young, Program Director, confirming my October 22nd 2005 (KONG13) reception of Q14. Once named "Cat Country", but not any more according to Brent. "There is a plan to 'flip' Q14 to FM in the next year or so, but we do need approval first", he says, and adds: "Q91 will not be flipped to FM, it has too strong a signal to abandon".

The WRTH 2007 lists no QTH for the Radio Reloj transmitter on 1020, so I don't know where to pinpoint my wall map. Also this transmitter was heard on March 11th at the island of Smøla.

Finally a QSL again! Also this time it was señor Isidro Betancourt who confirmed my reception of a Radio Reloj station. The station was heard on March 11th at Smøla, the DX paradise island west of mid Norway. I suppose this was the 10 kW transmitter in Guantánamo, and not the 1 kW in Cienfuegos. But of course I can't know for sure ...

Very nice email tonight from Dalila Fuentes, confirming my reception of YVWP Radio Apolo 1320. She attached an announcement (mp3) and a program schedule (xls). Radio Apolo was founded on 5 March 1971, but wasn't easy to pick up here when NRK Kvitsøy still was on the air with their 1200 kW on 1314. Heard them first time in 1985, but no QSL then.

XEHHI Radio Uno, Hidalgo del Parral (Chihuahua) 640

Tonight I got my QSL no. 450 from Latin America, which happened to be XEHHI Radio Uno, Hidalgo del Parral (Chihuahua) 640. Quite a nice station for this jubilee! Very nice email received from Hector Gabriel Lujan, who is both gerente and locutor at the station.
XEHHI was heard during KONG15 in October. This email arrived two months after I sent my letter to Hidalgo del Parral.
Thanks to Henrik Klemetz who made several phone calls to the station to be sure this was the "Radio Uno" I had heard, as two stations with this name were listed on 640.

HIVP Radio Olímpica, La Vega 970

Thanks to Henrik Klemetz of Sweden and Dino Bloise of USA, I received a perfectly written QSL letter today from Edison Fernández, Director Programación at HIVP Radio Olímpica. I heard this Dominican Republic station during my first visit to Lista, in November 2005, and have been trying to get a QSL since then. The solution was to put detective Klemetz with his contacts on the case. Thanks a lot, guys!

LU6 Radio Atlántica, Mar del Plata 760

Very nice email this night from Héctor Mario Panasci, who runs the program Música de Nuestra Tierra which I heard during KONG15 last October. One morning this nice station was heard with an excellent signal, until conditions turned to North America again.

On Saturday April 14th I received a phone call from the station. They wantet to interview me live, and so they did. First a guy who talked English to me and Spanish to their listeners, and after the live session was over I also spoke to Héctor Mario Panasci.
Radio Atlántica is indeed a very nice radio station!

Very nice reply last night from a great radio station in Chachapoyas, Perú: Radio Reina de la Selva 5486,68.
José David Reina, Gerente General, sent me a nice email with four photos from Chachapoyas attached. He writes that Chachapoyas was founded by the Spanish on 5th September 1538, and is situated 2250 metres above sea level. It's the capital of the Departamento de Amazonas.

Today's third QSL, and all by post, came from ZLXA Radio Reading Service, Levin. It took only 16 days to New Zealand and back. QSL card, personal letter, folder, schedule and some other stuff, all from Brian Stokoe, QSL Manager. Some highlights from his letter:

4RO Rockhampton QLD 990

My 18th MW Australian arrived tonight - 4RO "The Voice of Central Queensland" in Rockhampton, Queensland.
Rockhampton is "The Beef Capital" of Australia, and is located just 40km from the Pacific Ocean, north of Brisbane.
It was a tremendous pleasure hearing this station during the fabulous KONG15 DXpedition, and an even greater pleasure to discover the station ID on my recording just a couple of weeks ago.

One of my best QSLs ever, when Station Manager Kedron Parker last night confirmed my reception of "Wellington Access Radio 783 AM" (that's what their ID sounded like). He ends his email this way: "Bravo, and keep listening on your DX and also to our live webstream at www.accessradio.org.nz. We do not yet have a programme in Norwegian but if you create some audio maybe we'll play it!"
According to Arctic DX they already broadcast in Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island Maori, Vietnamese, Tokelauan and Hindi in addition to English, so why not Norwegian too?

WLOB Portland ME 1310

News-Talk WLOB surprised by sending an email confirmation on a Saturday. I heard this station at Lista late January, and JJ Jeffrey writes: "Since that high-powered station near you went off the air, we've been getting a lot of DX reception reports." With Kvitsøy still with 1200 kW on 1314 it was impossible to hear WLOB in Norway, but now it seems to have become quite a regular.

WGHB Farmville NC 1250

During a dinner with my good friend Bjarne Mjelde I received a very nice email from mr. Bill Cope, confirming my reception of Pirate Radio 1250 WGHB, heard during my DXpedition to Lista late January. A very surprising and pleasant catch considered the rather noisy conditiones we experienced.
Tonight we enjoyed some nice Australian red wine and some Camus XO cognac as well, and maybe because of that I also received another email from the station - from the owner Troy Dreyfus. He writes: "In fact, I you are about the 4th person over the last year or so that has heard our station overseas!"
Mr. Bill Cope adds: "I have an amateur radio license, AF4RP, so I understand the importance of replying to a request for a QSL card. I am retired from the Voice of America Relay Station here in Greenville. If you have ever listened to VOA, you are probably aware of VOA Greenville."

28 minutes past midnight I got my QSL no. 4 in February, with an email from Geoff Speed, Station Manager of Radio 4VL (918 kHz) and Radio 4DB (1629). He now confirms my reception of "Hot Country 1611" in Queensland, where 4DB has four transmitters on 1611.
I asked if they have separate programming on 1611 and 1629 (because of the "Hot Country 1611" announcement), but this is not the case he said.

Finally I got a confirmation from Radio Falcón 1350, heard at the island of Smøla, off the coast of mid Norway, on 2nd May 2004. Email from José G. Jatar Ramos. This also became my first LA verification in 2007.

KORL Honolulu HI 1180

One of only two new Hawaiians heard during KONG15. George Hochman, Owner, writes: "Aloha from Hawaii. Sounds like you where listening to our Filipino programming that airs on KORL 1180 AM. WJMC Rice Lake WI 1240

It was hard to reach this station, but after several reminders I finally received a confirmation of my KONG13 reception of WJMC. "Got your Email & did hear WJMC on your mp3. I think that's pretty cool to be able to pick us up so far away. Sometimes we can't even pick up the station in our own building!", John Roberts, Production Guru, writes. Nice title.
